Financial Diaries

Understanding the Challenges of

Managing Cash Flow

The Financial Diaries is a research methodology focused on collecting reliable, ongoing economic data from low-income workers.

Four years ago, Microfinance Opportunities started a Financial Diaries studies in three countries in South and Southeast Asia. For 12 months, researchers visited the same set of garment workers each week to learn about what garment workers earn and buy, how they spend their time each day, and what their working conditions are like.

The initiative partnered with local research firms BRAC (Bangladesh), TNS (Cambodia), and Morsel Ltd. (India). C&A Foundation (now Laudes Foundation) provided financial support, and Fashion Revolution used the research findings to advocate for changes in consumer and corporate behaviour and policy changes that improve the living and working conditions of garment workers everywhere.
